In reality, the vocal piece was not written by the Italian opera composer at all, but compiled as a pot-pourri by the English composer Robert Lucas Pearsall (under the pseudonym of ´G. Berthold´) who fell back on Rossini´s opera ´Otello´ as well. But that does no harm to the cheerful dramatic scene with its imitative onomatopoeic sounds. This edition is based on the first edition from 1825, thus containing the ´original text´, so to speak, of the humorous ´Cat Duet´. The obvious performers would be two cats, two tomcats or a mixed duet with cat and tomcat.
